と言う映画の舞台となった・・・ジョージア州のアトランタに・・・・・・LOAD ATLANTAというレースコースが有る
。

年に一度・・・・その年の秋に
それぞれの地域でシーズン中に優秀な成績を収めたアマチュア・ドライバー達が
この地に集結し
チャンピオンを決めるシーズン最後のランオフが開催される彼らの聖地で
高校球児の甲子園みたいなものだ
。
自分が初めてこの地を訪れたのは・・・・1985年の春か初夏だったと思うが・・・はっきり覚えている訳ではない
。
早朝のテストランで
ドライバーを務めていた未だ10代のクリストファーから
「今日のエンジンはもの凄く調子が良いけれど・・・何かしたの？」
と言うコメント
。
肌寒い朝だったから・・・「何もしてないよ・・・気温が低いからさ♪」と・・・答えながら
ボンネットを開いたら
・・・
CRX-GT4に装備されていたWEBERのボデイが真っ白になるほどの霜
・・・・
始めて見たキャブレターアイシングは
・・・・
感動的だった

There is a race course called Load Atlanta in Georgia, where a movie called "Gone with the wind" was set.
Once in the fall of the year,
it is their holy place where amateur drivers who achieved excellent results during the season gather in this area and the runoff to decide the champion is held in each area.
I think it was the spring ealy summer of 1985 when I first visited this place,
I do not remember clearly.
A teenager Christopher, who was a driver in a test run early in the morning, said, "Today's engine is extremely fast but something has happened?"
It was a chilly morning, and when I opened the hood while answering
"Don't do anything because the temperature is low",
the frost that the body of WEBER that was equipped with CRX-GT4 turned white.
The icing of the carburetor was impressive

The photo below shows Road atlanta, a 19-year-old Doug Peterson's first visit to school for two weeks off as a team member of Dave Rugh who runs Ford Escort, in 1971.
That was 14 years ago from my first experience.

Attached are 5 photos from Road Atlanta in 1971. The race was on Thanksgiving weekend back then, the very end of November.
I was attending college majoring in engineering but took 2 weeks off to crew for Dave Rugh with his 1300cc C Sedan Escort Mk.1.
I had built engines for him all year and it was my first trip across the U.S. It was a very exciting time for me, I was 19 years old and had not travelled very much.
It was so cold!!!! (For a California kid). Every morning we had to scrape ice off the car and light a camp stove under the sump to warm the oil. No synthetic oils back then!
The last 2 photos show factory participation from Datsun and British Leyland at the time.

レースは感謝祭の週末、11月の終わりに行われたんだ。
私は工学を専攻する大学に通っていたのだけれど、Dave Rughのチームクルーをするために2週間学校を休んだんだ。
一年を通じて彼のためにエンジンをチューニングし、そしてアトランタへの旅はアメリカを横断する初めての旅でもあったのさ。
カリフォルニアの若者にとって・・・・・ATLANTAはとても寒かった！！
毎朝私達は車から氷をこすり落としてエンジンオイルを温めるためにオイルパン下でキャンプストーブをつける必要があったくらいだ。
当時・・・・・合成油は無かったからね！
Dave 氏のエスコートが・・・・・凍ってます！
一体・・・どの様な・・・気象条件が整うと・・・・・・・・・こうなるんでしょうかね？？？

Bob Sharp Racing was the Datsun factory supported race team in SCCA.
The cars were Datsun 510, 610 in B Sedan class and 240Z in C Production class.
Beautiful paint and preparation.
ボブシャープレーシングがSCCAにおけるファクトリーサポートチームだった。
510.610はBセダンクラス・・・・,240ZはCプロダクションクラス向け
きれいな車だった。
BRITISH LEYLAND
Huffaker Engineering was the British Leyland factory supported team in SCCA.
The cars were MG Midget in F Production, MGB in E Production and Jensen Healy in D Production class.
Enclosed transporters were very rare back then.
フッカーエンジニアリングがBL社からファクトリーサポートを受けていた。
MGミジェットはFプロダクション、MGBがEプロダクション、ジェンセンヒーレーがDプロダクションクラスだった。
コンテナタイプのレーシングトレーラーが珍しかった頃さ。
Paul Newman
Paul Newman began racing a Datsun 510 prepared by Bob Sharp Racing and qualified for the SCCA Runoffs.
He was a very good driver and won the D Production National Championship in 1976 driving a Triumph TR6!
ポールニューマンがボブシャープの用意した510でレースしはじめランオフへ出走していた。
彼は優秀なドライバーで1976年にはトライアンフTR6で全米チャンピオンになった事も有った。
When he accepted the trophy for his win he said "This is way better than the Oscars and Hollywood!"
彼が優勝してトロフィーを手にした時
「これは・・・オスカーやハリウッドなんかより・・・・ず～～～良いね♪」
と
語っていた
