In 1973 I had travelled to England and purchased a Mk1 Ford Escort to race in 1974 and spent the winter preparing it for the SCCA C Sedan class.

I did manage to qualify for the runoffs and finished fourth in the C Sedan race.

 

1973年の冬、英国に行き・・・1974年に使うFord Escort　Mk.1　購入したんだ。

そして・・その冬・・・SCCAのC・セダンと言うカテゴリーにエントリーするための準備をしたのさ

。

10月のRun Off　では予選を通過し・・・決勝レースで4位に入賞したよ。

 

I raced this Escort finishing 4^th in 1974, 6^th in 1975 and 4^th in 1976 in the pouring rain. 

 74年に4位、75年は6位　そして76年は豪雨のファイナルで4位だったよ。

Why did you go to England to buy a car?

 

 何で英国まで・・・車を買いに行ったの？

 

 

 

(Doug)

I was already going to England with Dave Rugh to buy English Ford race parts to sell in the U.S.

 I found out about the car just before I left so borrowed the money for the car!

 

Dave Rogh氏に付き添って・・・・・北米で販売するための英国製フォードレースパーツの買い付けに・・・英国に行ってたんだ

 

 帰国するちょっと前・・・・・その車と出会ってしまって・・・・・借金して購入したのさ。

 

 

 Not a good idea to borrow money for a race car!!

借金までしてレースカーを買うなんて・・・・良いアイデアじゃあ無かったけどね♪

 

 

 

 

 

I honestly do not remember why I didn't just race a Mini from the start. I already owned the two Mini road cars.

 

その時2台のMINIを所有していたと言うのに、何でMiniで始めなかったのか

・・・・・・・・

よく覚えてないんだ

。 

 

今も持ち続けている・・・・・父上から譲り受けた・・・・・1967年COOPER-S。

 I have heard from your Mother that you were not interested in American football but had big interest in cars.

 Was it true?

 

 君のお母さんから、

「アメリカンフットボールにさえ全く興味を示さず・・・・・車一辺倒の子だったわ♪」

と聞いたことが有るけれど

 ？

 

(Doug)

I always was interested in cars from a very young age.

 My father took me to races when I was 13 years old.

 And yes, I had no interest in football!

 

子供の頃から・・いつも車の事で頭が一杯。

13才の時に父さんが自動車レースを見せてくれたんだ♪

 

だから・・・・フットボールには興味は向かなかったね・・・。 

 

 

 

Attached is a picture of me in 1966 at 14 years old in front of Carroll Shelby's factory in L.A.

The GT40 behind me had won Le Mans in June 1966.

My father took me down during a vacation!

I just started watching some football on TV the last few years.

 I still do not understand the rules!
